Today is Helen Keller Day! 🏴🦯👁️
Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, in 1880, Helen Keller lost her sight and hearing at just 18 months old due to illness. With the help of her remarkable teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan from the Perkins School for the Blind, Helen learned sign language and braille — and later, even how to speak.
Helen went on to become a powerful advocate for people with disabilities.
In 1925, she attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and famously challenged Lions to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.”
We accepted that challenge — and ever since, sight conservation and fighting preventable blindness have remained at the heart of our mission. 👁️🦁💛
In 1971, the Lions Clubs International Board of Directors officially declared June 1st as Helen Keller Day.
